Have you ever wondered why you should consider using your own website?

Lets look at some things that you may think about when deciding.

To have a website or not!

For any business, customers are the most important. Try running any business without them and you will understand. Lets take a retail shop as an example. It sits on the street with its window loaded with things that it hopes customers will want to buy. The customer walks past, looks into the window and either carries on walking or goes into the shop to look a bit closer at what has caught their eye.
This is exactly what lots of people do on the internet. We call it browsing. Just like the customer in the shop.
Some potential buyers will look in the local directories like Hibu (Yellow pages) or Thompson’s local and lots of others. They may come across the advertisement that costs you a fortune with every new publication. They may go on to get in touch or call in.
All that is fine if you just want passing trade. If your business is performing well for you then keep going. A website may not be the best way forward.

The bigger picture.

Now lets look at the bigger picture. Supposing that instead of a local shop, we had a business supplying things like parts, appliances, disability aids, bicycles etc. These kinds of businesses rely on customers who specifically need something. These people want to find what they seek quickly, accurately and at the best price. They turn to the internet because they may not be able to find a local business that supplies what they want.
Your website will give them that information with more accuracy and clarity with up to date information on product specification and price. Last years advert is no good to them. You can now provide pictures, Graphs and up to the minute prices without the cost of continual expensive brochure re-printing.

Google is going mobile friendly - Don't get penalised

Some time in April 2015 Google will have one of its many algorithm updates. (I have been told that is happening between the 20th and the 26th April to be as precise a possible)
It seems that Google will be giving more prominence to websites that are usable on multiple devices including Tablets and smartphones. I hope you saw this coming but if you haven't.. its not too late if you act now!
Here at www.pjdwebdesign.co.uk, we have seen this coming for the last 4 years and all of our clients have no need to worry as mobile capability has always been built in.
What will happen is that Google will rank websites that are mobile friendly higher up the results than those that are not. If your website does not work properly on mobile devices the then it will be significantly harder to find for prospective visitors.
Remember though that Google is not the only search engine but the others will surely follow suit.
I offer free, confidential and totally impartial advice on anything to do with the internet and web marketing so please feel free to ask me for advice. As an internet consultant, I make my money by helping people. www.pjdwebdesign.co.uk is my company but I operate independently and will help anybody who needs it.
I am the Digital marketing guru for several internet based organisations and offer my services for free to begin with. When You realize the benefit I can bring you... you will talk payment on your own terms..

Do we need the Keywords tag?

For some time now I have been trying to work out if it is worth using #Keywords in the head section of a web site. I have been reading blog posts and watching videos on this subject for over a year now and the consensus seems to be as follows:

  1. Don't bother with them as the search engines pay no attention to them at all.
  2. Use them if you wish as some search engines do use them.
the argument seems to be a 50/50 split of opinion.

Reading what Matt Cutts from Google tells us, it seems okay to ignore the keyword tag.
Duane Forrester from Bing says the same but use them if you want to.

I have studied this question for some time now. I was happy with that scenario but something has been bugging me for a while now. Its simply this....

Why has Google got a Keyword planner tool?
Why has Bing webmaster tools have a keyword research facility.

Why does SEMRush have a good tool for this. The same with Optimizely. both excellent services.

Is somebody pulling the wool over our eyes or should we carry on using them regardless. I think that I will keep using them simply because they are there to be used.

What do you think. please let me know.

My next project is to find out what the difference is between these two tags:

  1. <title></title>
  2. <meta name="title" content=""/>
Sounds like a Job for A/B testing.

Let me know your thoughts.

Choosing HTML or CMS

As I surf the internet (as I often do). I often wonder why people use different platforms such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal or HTML.

I think it would be a good idea to consider which platform to use whwn you think about having a website in the first place. Ask yourself a couple of basic questions like:
  • Who is going to manage the site once it has been made
  • How many people need access to the site for changes
  • How often are changes to the site likely to be made
If it is just going to be you and nobody else then it would probably be a good idea to use HTML as it gives you maximum control . You can use programs like Adobe Contribute to share work when you need to.

If several people are going to be involved in changing the site content, it would be more advantageous to use a Content Management System (CMS). Once you have the site looking and behaving as you would like. Other users can create and edit the content with various levels of permissions. You still stay in control of course as you would be the site administrator with the ability to edit everything.

I am a fan of hand coding but time constraints mean that I use 3rd party software as well. In Particular, Dreamweaver from Adobe.

There are definite advantages to doing thing differently. Make sure that you look to the future of your website and that will help you decide. The old adage of 'Horses for Courses' will serve you well.

Our website design company offers free advice to all so it costs nothing to ask.

What do you think?

Website repair

As I trawl the internet I come across lots of websites that have just sat on the internet apparently doing nothing. but taking up space.

I contact some of the site owners and my most common finding is that the website was an old idea they had but it doesn't do much for them if anything.

http://pjdwebdesign.co.uk/website-repair-uk/

Its not surprising in a lot of cases as I look behind the scenes and usually discover bits missing or badly written code with no thought of SEO or SEM at all. I put together a free report and send it to the owner of the website. The reports outline a few of the issues I discover and the steps I am prepared to take for them and certainly never charge for the service.

When they become customers, I give them the full service that their website requires and they end up with a web site that actually does work for them.

Website repair need not be expensive. It all depends on whats wrong with what is already there. The other option to website repair is the more expensive website re-design. Sometimes it is a good idea to start from scratch.

Contact my company today and get your free, no obligation quote for all the services we offer.
I would love to hear your thoughts and advice on any other technique for gaining new clients.

PSD to HTML - Do it right!

Today PSD to HTML and PSD to XHTML play both significant and critical roles in web design and development. Success and failure of any website or web application can also sometimes depend on these basic PSD to XHTML/CSS conversions. If your XHTML code is not perfect or not up to the mark users will move on to some other service provider. Good web design is important as it gives your customers their first impression. If your site does not look good on your customer’s browser, you could lose you customer forever.

There are many tools which automate your PSD to XHTML conversion, but so far none of them seem to produce good results why? It seems no tool can read your design, these tools can’t understand the importance of HTML tags and parts of your design. This can be one of the critical things that search engines may see. It’s always recommended to go for manual PSD to HTML conversion services.

PSD to HTML conversion services can be low cost ie: £20 for the home page and £10 or 50% for each inner page. You don’t redesign your website every day, do you? So this small investment can bring down your SEO cost if done in proper way. Your XHTML code should be valid and more importantly should be search engine friendly. It should use all the latest techniques and be at least one step down browser compatible. Code should have proper comments and CSS should be in separate files. All java script should be in separate files, your code should be neat and easy to understand. There should be no unwanted code or unwanted CSS. Your page loading time should optimized and this can be easily achieved once your code is perfected. Your page loading time has a major role to play in search engines. If your page takes too long to download due to bad coding, your customers will not wait, they will move on.

There are number of companies like PJD Web Design who provide low cost high quality PSD to CSS/HTML conversion services. Remember as a site owner or designer, your job is not just to go online with best design, it has be to coded properly as well. If you ignore this at the first stage you will pay a lot in terms of SEO, sales, customers and one day you will have to come back to re-code, paying out more than what you would have paid initially. Your XHTML code speaks to search engines. Good coding acts like a sales person for you and we all know that a bad sales person not only loses sales for your site but results in word of mouth poor publicity as well!. When you select any PSD to HTML Conversion Company like PJD Web Design give them all the details and make sure you and your chosen Conversion Company are on same track. Don’t rush, a small delay in coding is more acceptable than fast coding with hidden issues.

PJD Web Design offer conversion from all formats i.e.:

  • PSD
  • Ai (Fireworks)
  • InDesign
  • GIF
  • JPEG
  • TIFF
  • BMP
  • PNG
All well commented and fully compliant with all CSS requirements. Give us a shout for more information.
